Meta, previously known as Facebook, is intensifying its focus on artificial intelligence (AI) by aiming to develop its own artificial general intelligence (AGI) and making it available to developers.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized the need for advanced AI to enhance services and announced plans to integrate AI chips and research groups to support this initiative.

Zuckerberg said, “It’s become clearer that the next generation of services requires building full general intelligence.”

“Our long term vision is to build general intelligence, open source it responsibly, and make it widely available so everyone can benefit,” he continued.

“By the end of the decade, I think lots of people will talk to AIs frequently throughout the day using smart glasses like what we’re building with Ray Ban Meta,” predicted the billionaire.

The company’s recent emphasis on AI aligns with the industry’s broader trend towards embracing AI.

Dipanjan Chatterjee, an analyst at Forrester Research, said, “That trope around ‘every company is now a technology company’ has evolved to be every company is now an AI company.”

“It’s clear that the interest in the metaverse has soured considerably since the days that Facebook became Meta, and so it is no surprise that the company has turned to AI to bring some of the lost shine back to the brand,” explained the analyst.

This move also reflects Meta’s shift towards AI following the rebranding from Facebook to Meta.
