Vice President Kamala Harris avoided committing to whether she would debate former President Donald Trump’s eventual running mate.

When asked, Harris pivoted to discussing President Biden’s State of the Union address instead of giving a direct answer.

“We just got through the State of the Union. And I’m just so excited about what we accomplished last night and our president,” Harris said.

“But given what you argue is at stake here, will you take the chance to show voters more of what they saw last night to take on Trump directly in debates?” ABC’s Mary Bruce asked.

“We’ll get to that at some point, and we’ll deal with that,” Harris said.

“But the point is, right now, on this day after the State of the Union, I think the president laid down the facts for the American people in terms of what’s at stake. And I thought he did an extraordinary job,” she said.

Her evasiveness on the issue mirrors the Biden administration’s broader unwillingness so far to definitively state whether Biden himself would debate Trump, who is currently the presumptive 2023 GOP presidential nominee.

Debate participation has been a subject of speculation given concerns about Biden’s mental and physical fitness raised by both Republicans and Democrats.

However, Harris maintained that Biden had effectively conveyed his vision and principles in the State of the Union.
