A bill passed by the House of Representatives would force the Chinese-owned company ByteDance to divest ownership of TikTok within the U.S. or risk having the app removed from app stores.

Some conservative voices warned the bill could have unintended consequences and give the president too much power, describing it as a “Trojan horse.”

Tucker Carlson wrote, “In a classified briefing this afternoon, attended by officials from the Biden Justice Department, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed that Elon committed ‘election interference’ in 2022 by ‘changing the algorithms’ on X to alter the results of the midterms that year.”

It could potentially allow the government to force the sale of any social media platform deemed to be interfering in elections.

“Not coincidentally, the anti-TikTok legislation now being debated on the Hill would allow the federal government to force the sale of any social media platform that interferes in elections. Just so you know what’s coming in 2025,” Carlson added.

While addressing concerns about China’s influence, critics said it may ultimately hinder free speech.

The bill’s supporters argue the issue of China’s potential control over TikTok’s 170M American users needs to be addressed, saying the company must “break up” with the Chinese Communist Party or lose U.S. users.

“This is my message to TikTok: Break up with the Chinese Communist Party or lose access to your American users,” Rep. Mike Gallagher stated.

“America’s foremost adversary has no business controlling a dominant media platform in the United States,” he said. “TikTok’s time in the United States is over unless it ends its relationship with CCP-controlled ByteDance.”
